Barbie Film Banned In Vietnam Shows 9-Point Line Map Of South China Sea

The film, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, shows a map of China’s unilaterally claimed territories in the South China Sea.

A scene was shown in the Barbie movie with a map showing the “nine-dash line,” CNBC.com reported.

The line is used on Chinese maps to represent their claim to most of the South China Sea.

Vietnam is just one of many countries challenging China’s unilateral claims.

The dispute over the territory of the South China Sea was heard before the International Court of Justice in The Hague in 2016.

As a result, China’s claim to most of the South China Sea was rejected.

However, China did not accept the decision.

The South China Sea is a major trade route connecting major trade routes in Southeast Asia.

Meanwhile, the Barbie film is slated to hit theaters in Vietnam on July 21, the same day as its American debut.

However, according to state-run newspaper Tuổi Trẻ, the ban has prompted cinemas to remove the film’s poster from their upcoming listings.

The ban was confirmed by Vi Kien Thanh, head of Vietnam’s cinema department.

“Barbie” is not the first film to be banned in Vietnam for containing a “nine-dash line” card image.

Tom Holland’s 2022 film Unchartered was banned last year for the same reason, as was DreamWorks’ 2019 film Abominable.
