Diksia.com - The film Heretic is one of the latest works from A24, a production house renowned for high-quality horror films like The Witch, Hereditary, and Midsommar. Directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, this film combines psychological horror elements with deep religious themes.
Heretic premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 8, 2024, receiving a warm reception from the audience. The film was subsequently released in U.S. theaters on November 8, 2024, and began screening in Indonesia on November 20, 2024.
Heretic tells the story of two young girls named Barnes and Paxton, played by Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East. They are devout followers of the Mormon faith, intending to spread their religious teachings to those unfamiliar with Mormonism.
During their mission, Barnes and Paxton arrive at an isolated house owned by Mr. Reed, portrayed by Hugh Grant. Initially, they hesitate to enter the house because they don’t see any signs of women around. However, Mr. Reed assures them that his wife is baking blueberry pie in the back of the house.
Upon entering the house, the initially warm atmosphere turns tense as Mr. Reed starts questioning the truth of the Mormon faith that Barnes and Paxton believe in. The tension escalates when they realize that the blueberry pie scent mentioned by Mr. Reed actually comes from a candle in the living room.
Barnes and Paxton then realize something is wrong and try to leave the house. Unfortunately, Mr. Reed locks the house’s door and forces them to choose between two doors: Believe or Disbelieve. Their choice will determine their fate.
The tension peaks when Barnes and Paxton choose the Believe door and get trapped in a dark, creepy basement. This is where the psychological terror begins, with Mr. Reed continuously provoking and testing their faith. The film successfully creates a tense and suspenseful atmosphere, keeping the audience on the edge of their seats.
Heretic not only offers intense horror tension but also invites viewers to reflect on faith and belief. With stunning performances from its cast, especially Hugh Grant as the main antagonist, the film provides an unforgettable viewing experience.
