Synopsis
The novel follows the parallel stories of Marie-Laure and Werner, who are both trying to survive the devastation of World War II in occupied France. Marie-Laure is a blind French girl who lives with her father, Daniel, a locksmith at the Museum of Natural History in Paris.
When the Nazis invade France, they flee to Saint-Malo, where they stay with Marie-Laure’s great-uncle Etienne, a traumatized veteran of the First World War.
Daniel carries with him a replica of a rare diamond called the Sea of Flames, which is rumored to grant eternal life but also curse its owner and those around them with misfortune. He hides the diamond in one of his models of Paris that he made for Marie-Laure to help her navigate the city.
Werner is a brilliant German boy who has a knack for radio technology. He lives in an orphanage with his sister Jutta in a mining town, where he faces a bleak future of working in the coal mines.
He manages to escape his fate by impressing a Nazi officer with his ability to fix radios, and gets accepted into a prestigious military school. There, he undergoes a brutal training that tests his loyalty and morality. He eventually becomes a radio specialist who tracks down resistance fighters across Europe.
The paths of Marie-Laure and Werner cross in Saint-Malo during the Allied bombing of the town in August 1944. They both find themselves trapped in different buildings, with only their radios as their lifelines. As they communicate with each other, they discover a connection that transcends their differences and circumstances.
