Since the industrial revolution around 200 years ago, the world has warmed by around 1.1°C.

Environmental activists around the world have targeted the fossil fuel industry, including Britain’s Just Stop Oil, which protested during a high-profile sporting event this summer.

Most representatives of the oil and gas industry say that sustainable production is necessary to meet the world’s energy needs.

Cutting oil and gas production would be “dangerous and irresponsible,” Shell’s chief executive told BBC News.

The International Energy Agency says there will be no new investments in oil, gas and coal right now if the government is serious about tackling the climate crisis.

UN chief António Guterres recently said investing in new oil and gas production is “an economic and moral lunacy.”

This week, the world witnessed its hottest day on record on Tuesday, when the temperature rose to 17C for the first time.
