Diksia.com - In a fascinating display of tradition, Victor Hugo Sosa, the Mayor of San Pedro Huamelula in Mexico, recently tied the knot with a female crocodile in a ceremonial union.
The crocodile, named Alicia Adriana, became the blushing bride in a wedding ceremony attended by the villagers of Huamelula. According to the locals, marrying a crocodile is believed to bring good fortune to the community.
The nuptials took place at the San Pedro Huamelula City Hall, where the indigenous Chontal people reside in the southern state of Oaxaca, Mexico.
“This is the fusion of two cultures. The unification of Huaves and Chontales,” expressed Mayor Victor Hugo Sosa, speaking to journalists, as reported by The Mirror UK on Friday, June 30, 2023.
Mayor Victor Hugo Sosa proudly declared that he and his “wife” share a deep bond of love. During the wedding ceremony, he expressed, “I take this responsibility because we love each other. That’s what matters. You can’t marry without love.”
Prior to the grand presentation to the village, Mayor Victor Hugo Sosa carried the bride crocodile, her mouth gently sealed shut, as the locals danced around them in celebration.
Resembling a blushing bride, the female crocodile wore a green skirt, a colorful embroidered tunic traditional to Mexico, and a headpiece adorned with ribbons and sequins. To complete the ensemble, she donned a white veil.
At the end of the dance ceremony, Mayor Victor Hugo Sosa tenderly kissed the head of his crocodile bride, sealing their unconventional union.
“To us, the crocodile is essential because she is the daughter who brings us water, a bountiful harvest, and rain. Thus, the Almighty sends us food, fish, corn, and abundant crops,” explained Olivia Perez, the coordinator of this symbolic marriage ceremony, during the Friday, June 30, 2023 event.
Before the wedding festivities, the locals paraded the crocodile bride through the village streets, with men fanning her using their hats.
Others tossed fishing nets into the air, kneeling down in hopes that the crocodile bride would catch an abundance of fish.
