Although Mars’ atmosphere is about 100 times thinner than Earth’s, it is still enough to make the sky appear blue-gray during the day. As Martian winds carry dust clouds from the surface, the sky becomes thinner and turns reddish.

However, if we are on a planet or satellite without an atmosphere or with a very thin atmosphere, such as the Moon or Mercury, the sky will look black during the day and night. Photos taken by the Apollo spacecraft on the moon show that the sky there remains black even in bright sunlight.
