Xiaomi Chief Executive Officer Lei Jun said at the Xiaomi Investor Day event that 70,000 units of its first electric car had been ordered by April 20, 2024.
This number is far from the manufacturer's original estimates. That's why his party will increase vehicle production at the Beijing factory.
“On Xiaomi Investor Day, I am pleased to announce that lock-in orders for the Xiaomi SU7 have exceeded 70,000 units on April 20th. In order to meet the increasing demand, we are increasing production and aim to deliver more than 100,000 units this year,” said Lei Jun via his personal X account, quoted on Wednesday (April 24).
For the avoidance of doubt, the numbers disclosed by Lei Jun are the exact number of customers. That means they actually bought it and not just made a booking or a token.
When it was launched, the Xiaomi SU7 was only planned to sell 100,000 units by the end of 2024. In fact, the zero-emission vehicle only needed less than a month to reach 70 percent of this goal.
Xiaomi SU7 is a car that has been in development since 2020. This vehicle was specially designed by Li Tianyuan, who designed BMW cars such as the BMW i Vision Circular Concept, the BMW iX and the new 7 Series. Li was assisted by James Qiu, who previously worked for Mercedes-Benz.
The SU7 is a sporty sedan with a futuristic touch in many parts. At first glance, the vehicle looks like a mix between the Porsche Taycan Turbo and the Tesla Model 3 and S.
The Xiaomi SU7 standard variant is equipped with a battery with a capacity of 73.6 kWh and a 220 kW electric motor with a torque of 400 Nm. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h takes 5.28 seconds and the top speed is 210 km/h.
The SU7 Pro, which has a 94.3 kWh battery, now achieves a maximum mileage of 830 km. However, the power and torque are the same as the standard variant.
