Diksia.com - SAN FRANCISCO, Automaker Volkswagen (VW) will launch self-driving or driverless vehicles for transportation and delivery services in Texas, United States, in 2026.
Volkswagen will also test ten ID Buzz electric vehicles (EVs) equipped with Mobileye self-driving technology in the same region.
“Our main goal is to bring a fully autonomous vehicle to market as a scalable commercial product,” said Christian Senger, a Volkswagen board member who oversees the development of self-driving technology.
Volkswagen further said it will be able to leverage Mobileye’s supplier base and map data to achieve economies of scale and reduce costs.
“We are actively exploring different options for different cities,” said Katrin Lohmann, President of Volkswagen ADMT.
Volkswagen, along with GM’s Cruise and Alphabet’s Waymo, will test autonomous vehicles in Texas, which is known to have the fewest regulations for self-driving cars.
Companies have poured billions of dollars into developing technology they say will improve road safety.
However, Tesla, Cruise, and Waymo, among others, have missed their goals to bring self-driving cars to market, and their vehicles are struggling to handle rare and unexpected driving situations.
